10 : My Story

Like a comic book super hero my side hustle needs a history. Not just the facts, a proper story.

Of all the ideas I could have chosen, why am I pursuing this one ? What is compelling, special, or just interesting about it ?

I was working in hospitality until Covid restrictions closed airports, hotels, and restaurants. Thousands of people suddenly unemployed. What would I do ?

When I thought about it there were no big debts or expenses for me to stress about so I really only needed a few hundred dollars per week to run my car and keep a roof over my head. What would I do ?

I’ve always been quite handy, fixing or building anything from bikes to furniture (thanks dad). All I needed were tools, a work space, and some things to fix. Could I fix things for other people ?

Things that don’t work properly tend to frustrate me. They need to be fixed, used for spares to fix something else, or thrown away. Do other people have the same frustration ?

I decided to have a go at being self employed and fix things for other people. What did I have to lose ?

I started this hustle because I noticed other people often didn’t have the tools or skills to fix their own things. They needed someone to do it for them, and I knew that someone could be me.

Looking online I found quite a few handymen offering their services. Some were home-renovation tradie types, some specialised a single task, some did yard maintenance, and some did a bit of everything. I have no idea how I might offer something better or different to any of them.

For now I thought I’d offer a small list of tasks everyone needs from time to time and adjust the list according to demand. Lawn mowing, cleaning paths and patios, moving that too-big item, and fixing small things like leaky taps.
