Plants know what they need to do. My job is to make sure they’re happy enough to do it. That’s the main thing I’ve learnt from three years of farm work, gardening, and doing Horticulture at TAFE.

Then one day in late 2025 I found myself suddenly unemployed. I was 63, but I’d pent three years learning a bunch of new and very useful skills. A little encouragement from others and 2026 became the year of self employment. And I couldn’t be happier, should’ve done it years ago.
Providing a service really is simple. Know the work, have the tools, have a way to be paid and a way to let people know I’m available. And of course keep a good spread sheet for tax time. That’s all.
I registered a business name : Specialised Garden Services and bought some liability insurance. The invoice I gave people had my ABN and bank account details on it. The first jobs came from an ad’ on a supermarket noticeboard. And from there I grew.
It’s been quite the learning experience. I’m grateful to everyone who took the time and had the patience to teach new things to an older guy who didn’t know what he was doing.
